Book of Legends
Bill trained the famous Arabian stallion Xenophon, a legendary cutting horse now in the book of legends. “In the beginning, the horse showed no promise and would not work for another famous trainer. In six months I trained Xenophon to cut cattle. We won four 1st places in our first show.” Bill said. Bill then went to the Los Angeles County Fair competing against some of the most famous Quarter Horse cutting horse trainers of all time. Bill and Xenaphon brought the crowd to their feet, placing in the top four in four different classes against 40 to 50 Quarter Horses in every class. This has never been done before or since then.
After his success with Xenophon, Bill turned his attention to Reined Cow Horses. In 1988 he placed 3rd in the Pro-Am World Championship Snaffle Bit Maturity in Reno, Nevada. That same year he led the nation and won the West Coast Cal-Western Appaloosa Association Hackamore Reining Championship on “Sheza Commandart.” With limited showings, he took “Chex Me Out Montana” to the National Reined Cow Horse AssociationHackamore Championship in Oceano near Santa Barbara California. Another win was the Central Coast Reining Horse Association- Open Jackpot Reining.
In 1997, Bill acquired a buckskin stallion named “Dun It For Money” out-of the famous “Hollywood Dun It.” “I entered “Dun It For Money” in the prestigious Monterey National Horse Show and the annual Santa Barbara Fiesta Stock Horse Show and Rodeo in the Open Reining. We dominated the competition and walked away with two championships.” Bill said.
Born to Ride the Challenge!
Bill Cameron has set the bar of competition high in equestrian sports. He is a prominent professional clinician and coach. Bill and his horse “Dun It For Money” were currently 2nd in the Nation in the Extreme Cowboy Racing Association (EXCA) Pro standings when Dun If For Money passed away due to a heart attack on May 24, 2011.
The EXCA is recognized for the equestrian sport of Extreme Cowboy Racing in the United States. The first National Championship Race was held in 2008.
Although safety is first, the versatility required in EXCA race includes the disciplines of reining, cutting, dressage, jumping, roping, mounted shooting and archery. The rider must demonstrate horsemanship, skill and speed on a well-rounded and trained horse.
The horse and rider are judged on the approach of the obstacle, the obstacle itself and the departure. There is a score given for each obstacle on the course and for overall speed and horsemanship.
According to Bill extreme race events are exciting and are sweeping the United States and gaining in popularity oversees. People like to challenge themselves and their horses in the game. Contestants have 30 seconds to complete and conquer each obstacle.
Bill’s training approach is a natural method based on the horse’s point of view. “This style of training produces a content and willing partner. It is important for the horse to be willing to go through obstacles with grace and ease on the trail and in front of large crowds of people.” Bill said.
“I hold myself accountable for every step my horse takes. I don’t make my horse do anything, I set-up opportunities for success. Timing is everything in riding and it is about being in cadence with the horse. I literally breathe in rhythm with the horse.” Bill said. Bill has a genuine love for horses and is a natural born rider. “A horse is the reflection of their rider. They are not inanimate objects. Read their body language and make your horse feel special. Groom and give him affection.” He said.
“I was born to ride in the Extreme Cowboy Race. There is no other sensation like it! The challenge! It’s thrilling to see the horse and rider working together, overtaking an obstacle at speed, with ease and success. No words can describe the exhilaration of an Extreme Race. I love to ride! I get great satisfaction in training my clients and their horses. It is exciting for me to see my students develop a trust with their horse, and become successful in competitions. It is all about having fun while improving personal horsemanship abilities.” Bill said.
Bill has trained many different breeds of horses that have won titles and championships.
