John has my vote. If you ever watch him work with horses and people you would immediately know why. He is patient, kind to both horse and rider and passionate about what he does. His enthusiasm is catching. Even if you keep getting it wrong he doesn't get mad or upset he just continues to work to help you and your horse until you both understand and do it right, whether it be an obstacle for the ExCA course, a shoulder yield, collection, lead departure or sliding stop.

I've watch timid riders blossom under his instruction at both horsemanship and ExCA clinics. And I seen reluctant or problem and troubled horses and riders find the right answer when they did know they could. My horse and I can certainly attest to that.

John is a good ambassador for the sport of horseback riding in general, a talented trainer and instructor. But he is also a staunch supporter of the EXtreme Cowboy Association who has worked long hours donating his time and energy to the success of ExCA, both as a top notch judge, horseman and ambassador. I’m proud to say I’ve ridden under him at and watch him judge ExCA events; I can’t think of anyone else who deserves being in the Hall of Fame more than John.

My name is Jaime Ciletti and i competed in the extreme cowboy race that we had here in Hawaii last weekend. It was such an amazing experience to have John Black judging us and then taking his time to clinic with us all day! If i was visiting hawaii from the mainland i would definitely be sight seeing or at the beach. John started our clinic at 9 am the next day and we didn't finish until 5 pm! I know that all the girls from Circle C equestrian center that came with me learned an enormous amount of great knowledge and we cant wait to see him again! Hopefully in Kansas this year!

Where to start? 4 kids headed up for pizza to meet some jude called "John Black". A week later the kids have not stopped talking about their "New Hero" John Black. Here is a man who has a wealth of knowledge to give and is willing to give to all. Our 3 kids usually clinic with incoming clinicians for at most an hour. John told them I am here for you until the sun goes down, and boy did he mean it!!!! With over an hour trailer ride home we finally had to tell the kids we have to leave. John has inspired these kids not only as horseman but as young adults to be better in their sport and better in their lives. As a parent you could not ask for a better role model for your kids to look up to. We only wish we had more access to John more often. Hurry back to Hawaii, there are adults and kids lining up to be inspired! You have all our votes at Circle C Equestrian Center.

Hi my name is Annie Kunkler and I compete in the Aloha regions pro division. I am writing in honor of judge John Black. This last weekend we were all given the honor of having him judge our first regional finals. The first day out on the course he truly beat our best expectations. With a smile and good humur he spent a 14 hour day out in the hot sun. Not once was there a single complaint, every setback he faced with a smile. The thing that blew me away, was he had eveyone else smiling and cheering on their competitors as well. That was just the first day. For the two following days he spent all day teaching, never once losing his cool or his professional appeal. He helped everyone with equal consideration, and built up our confidence to take on the world. He took time to meet a few of our local paniolos who are still of the opinion that real cowboys don't do those things on horseback. After a little time with John I think we may see a few of them competing in next years extreme cowboy race. I cannot think of a better spokesman for the sport. He not only judged fairly but gave us a great understanding of how to improve ourselves. Every person young/old men women, we all had a smile on our faces after talking with John Black. His friendly inviting manner encouraged the biggest clinic crowd I have seen here in Hawaii in the last five years. Al Dunning came last year and if forced to pick I feel most people would rather go ride with John. It is his knowledge combined with the open manner that brings people to the association. I hope he wins the honor of Hall of Fame in reward for all the hard work he puts in. Thank You for Your Time, Annie Kunkler

Had the opportunity of watching him judge Hawaii's Extreme Cowboy Race and also took a couple clinics from him. What an inspiring person, I really appreciated his focus on the kids and the knowledge he passed on to us. I hope you'll consider him as I look forward to taking future clinics from him. He's a great communicator, patient, and always provided good advise to all.

What an asset John Black is to the EXCA...and the best ambassador that this event can have...this man loves his job and he loves helping others with their horses. I have been a volunteer at the events in Hawaii and then participated in one of John's clinics after the event. John sets the horse and rider up for success! I am sure there will be many more participants in the sport after John's visit to Hawaii!! Thankyou for sending him! He is a treasure!

I also am new to the EXCA. It represents all that I admire and strive to be as a true "cowgirl": horsemanship, athleticism, patience, sportsmanship, and most of all FUN with my animals! John Black has been a judge at all but one of the events that I've participated in. He exemplifies multiple criteria for the Hall of Fame, especially being a fabulous ambassador and promoter of the Sport. He is open, willing, calm, positive and encouraging, and most of all professional at all times. He makes you feel welcome to join and participate, even IF you are riding a very green or unruly animal (mine!) who isn't perfect at everything. However, will point out the positive points and give you comments on things to work on in a very constructive and supportive way. I highly recommend and support voting for John Black for the EXCA Hall of Fame!

I can't say enough for what John has done for our club here in Hawaii. A fantastic ambassador of the sport! All I heard all weekend from Friday evening pizza get-together to Monday evening after finishing the race and 2 days of clinics were compliments. I had one group that had to travel from the other side of the island, they came Friday evening, back the next morning, and again on Sunday morning for the clinic. He has helped and inspired so many from the little kids to the old guys! We can't wait for him to come back. The biggest kick...when the kids asked him to autograph their shirts!

What stands out about John is pure HEART!

I found John on the internet when I got interested in the EXCA. I didn't know if he was worth my time but he was close so off I went for a lesson. What I found was a man with the talent to train me, a cheerleader to make me give it a try, and a heart filled with love for good horses and good people. Like a good horse, John has the temperament to do his job exceedingly well. And like a race horse, John doesn't know how to stop, he will work as long and hard as it takes to get the job done. And always with that big SMILE that we all know so well, he greets us all with that, every time we meet. Even non "Horse" people could learn many life lessons from John, he has his priorities right. I could not imagine a better Ambassador or Promoter, John has that covered with his positive attitude, it's always "yes, yes, yes!" that you hear from John about the EXCA, good horses & good riders. John has done more for this sport than anyone I know.

John has my vote!
